Myths – 1. Don't ask money for helping workOctober 13, 2023

The statement that "people are fundamentally good and are willing to help others" may be subject to debate, but it is certainly true that many individuals engage in organized or spontaneous acts of kindness, whether occasionally or regularly, to assist their less fortunate fellow human beings. This can take the form of donations, volunteering with an organization, or even more everyday acts such as sharing a sandwich or giving up one's seat.

Volunteer helpers and donors are crucial components of both civil and state aid organizations. Without their selfless generosity, many institutions would find themselves in extremely challenging situations.

However, an interesting misconception has developed regarding this matter. It suggests that charitable work must be done solely out of goodwill and love for humanity, and money should not be accepted for it. This occasionally puts people who engage in such work not just in their spare time, but as a full-time job, in an uncomfortable position. They rely on the income they receive for this work to raise their children and pay their bills.

Professional helpers perform their work with dedication, love, and faith, but you can't pay for groceries with these qualities. Can we imagine that only those who don't need a salary would be able to take on such work? That every organization established to address charitable and social issues would be run exclusively by those in extremely good financial standing? What would a "Rich Kids Charity" look like?

A common misconception similar to this is the belief that nonprofit organizations cannot generate profits. However, the nonprofit category simply means that the profits cannot be distributed among the ownership, but rather must be reinvested into the organization to support its operations and achieve its objectives.
These organizations also require profits to sustain themselves. Civil and social enterprises need to operate in a sustainable manner. In order to effectively fulfill their missions, they require financial stability and expert manpower.
